You pressed the elevator button. When the doors opened, there was a silver-haired woman inside,
holding a bunch of white daisies. You stepped in, stood beside her, and pressed the same floor.
She glanced at you. Then glanced again. Then she said:
"I like your vest. Turtleneck with sleeveless-that's a brave combination."
You paused, then smiled. You said thank you, said you'd bought it just last week and almost
hesitated to keep it because the sleeveless cut made you feel a little exposed.
She shook her head. "Don't. Your arms are beautiful. And that collar" she gestured to her own
throat,"it makes you look like someone who knows what she wants."
The elevator arrived. Before she stepped out, she turned and said:
"At the end of the day, dressing is about wearing a mood. And your mood today? I really like it."
You stood in the elevator as the doors slowly closed. You didn't follow out right away. Instead, you
looked down at yourselfthat sleeveless turtleneck knit vest, a soft cream color, as simple as can
be. But in that moment, it felt like a small medal.
So it wasn't just a piece of clothing you were wearing. It was an attitude. And someone actually
saw it.
